The SWM x BCU Student Membership initiative will provide students with opportunities to develop connections with employers throughout the West Midlands, gain a deeper understanding of sustainability careers, and enhance their employability skills. The programme is open to students across all university courses, including engineering, fashion, art and design, business, computing, and English.
Participants will be encouraged to engage in practical activities, build professional networks, and learn about the growing importance of sustainability in various career paths. Deborah Phelpstead, Head of Sustainability at BCU, stated, “We are committed to giving students opportunities to develop the skills, experience and professional networks they need to succeed beyond university.”
Phelpstead added, “As part of our Strategy 2030, we are Developing Talent for Tomorrow. This goes beyond the classroom, and we are equipping and empowering tomorrow’s workforce with a personalised education that gives our students the skills and connections to make a difference in the West Midlands, and beyond.” She also highlighted that the programme will help students identify how they can support the green agenda through their careers.
The initiative is designed to be free to remove barriers to skills development and networking, ensuring an inclusive opportunity for all students. It complements BCU’s STEAM strategy, fostering collaboration and innovation across disciplines. Students involved will be recognised through the BCU Award platform.
The SWM x BCU Student Membership is set to launch in November. Following a one-year pilot, feedback will be used to shape the programme's future.
