St Stephen's Church in Redditch Town Centre is now illuminated by a new architectural lighting scheme, installed earlier this month to showcase its distinctive architecture and create a focal point.

The landmark building on Church Green now benefits from uplighting, designed to be appreciated both day and night. Redditch Borough Council leader, Cllr. Matt Dormer, stated that the project supports the town's heritage and aims to enhance the experience for visitors.
Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and delivered by Redditch Borough Council in partnership with Redditch BID, the scheme was developed following feedback from local businesses seeking improved lighting around Church Green. Energy-efficient lighting has been used to highlight key architectural features while minimising light spill.

"We’re delighted to have worked alongside Redditch Borough Council to bring this project to life. St Stephen’s Church is one of Redditch’s most iconic landmarks, and illuminating it will not only showcase its beautiful architecture but also create a more attractive and welcoming town centre after dark."

Muj Rahmam · Manager of Redditch BID
Muj Rahmam, Manager of Redditch BID, expressed delight in working with the council, noting that the illumination of St Stephen's Church, an iconic landmark, will enhance its architecture and create a more welcoming town centre. He added that the investment is expected to benefit local businesses by encouraging more visitors, increasing footfall, and supporting the evening economy. The ability to change lighting colours for special occasions also adds a dimension for community events and pride.

"We are delighted with the result. “The lighting highlights the church’s beauty and brings some joy to our town centre. St Stephen’s remains at the heart of our community, and this thoughtful addition helps to celebrate Redditch’s rich history."

Fraser Oates · Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church
The Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church, Fraser Oates, commented on the positive result, stating the lighting highlights the church's beauty and brings joy to the town centre, celebrating Redditch's history.
The project is part of ongoing investment in Redditch Town Centre, reflecting priorities identified by local businesses. It aims to create a more welcoming environment, improve perceptions of safety, and discourage anti-social behaviour around Church Green. The lighting will operate daily from 6am to 9:15am and 3:30pm until midnight, with photocell technology managing activation.
