The investment will fund a range of enhancements, including a new pump track for cyclists and skaters, a circular walking path, a community kick-about and multi-use games space, upgraded gym equipment, and a refurbished children’s soft play area. Mayor Ward visited Shirebrook Leisure Centre to announce the funding, highlighting the importance of outdoor spaces and exercise facilities for community health and wellbeing.
The project, named Kissingate Active Together, is a collaboration between Shirebrook Town Council, Shirebrook Leisure Centre, and Bolsover District Council. It aims to address deep deprivation, poor health, and a lack of accessible local activity sites in Shirebrook North, as identified through local feedback.
Councillor Martin Barber of Shirebrook Town Council stated that the funding will significantly benefit the community, encouraging more people of all ages and abilities to become active and improve their health. Tracy Baxter, Shirebrook Leisure Centre general manager, added that the improvements represent an investment in the town's health, happiness, and future, aiming to develop the centre as a community hub.
The £3m Mayor’s Community Development Fund is investing in priority areas across the East Midlands to boost community resilience and local skills. Other communities, including Warsop and Sutton-in-Ashfield, have also received significant funding for similar projects.
