North West Leicestershire District Council officers have alerted councillors to an emerging budget gap, with early planning underway to address a predicted £3.9 million shortfall by 2029/30.

In preparation for its budget-setting process, council officers have informed councillors of a projected gap between income and spending within the next three years. On Tuesday 27 October, Cabinet members received a report detailing this anticipated £3.9 million deficit from 2029/30 and endorsed initial work to tackle the financial challenge.
The full implications of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), which would see NWLDC replaced by a larger, geographically expanded council, are not yet known. Consequently, the council is implementing proactive measures to prepare for various potential outcomes. By identifying financial pressures early and reviewing spending plans before the gap materialises, the authority aims to minimise any potential impact on frontline services.
The forecast budget gap is attributed to a combination of rising costs and ongoing uncertainty regarding future funding from the Government. Like many councils nationwide, NWLDC faces increasing expenditure on essential services, including employee costs, contracts, utilities, and other operational expenses. Simultaneously, future funding arrangements remain unclear due to ongoing Local Government Reorganisation and wider reforms to council funding.
“

"Local government is entering a period of unprecedented change and there remains a great deal of uncertainty around how Local Government Reorganisation will affect district councils, their finances and the services they provide. Rather than waiting for those details to emerge, we are taking a responsible approach by starting our budget planning early. This allows us to understand the risks, plan ahead and make informed decisions that help safeguard the services our residents and businesses depend upon. North West Leicestershire District Council has a strong track record of good financial management and this early work is part of ensuring we remain in the best possible position during a time of significant change."
