The Government has announced that it is in the final stages of agreeing 10 new devolution agreements, including a Mayoral Strategic Authority for Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland.
Mayoral Strategic Authorities support councils in working together on issues that affect the wider region, including transport, infrastructure, skills, employment, housing, and regeneration.
If approved, the proposed new authority could bring more powers, funding, and decision-making away from Westminster and closer to local communities, offering greater financial flexibility and supporting councils to respond more effectively to local priorities and opportunities.
The new authority would not replace local councils. Melton Borough Council and other local authorities will continue to deliver local services to their communities, while the new authority would focus on agreed strategic priorities for the wider area.
We recently joined with the leaders across LLR confirming our support for devolution and the establishment of a Mayoral Strategic Authority something that we have advocated for at Melton for some time. I am delighted the Government have listened and look forward to working with colleagues to secure new funding and powers for our region.
This announcement is part of the Government delivering a growth package for English Local Authorities and Strategic Authorities. Local councils across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland will work with Government on these proposals.
Further details about the proposals and any consultation arrangements will be shared as they become available. Residents, businesses, and partner organisations will have opportunities to help shape the future arrangements before any final decisions are made.
