A new healthcare partnership has been established between the University of Nottingham, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), and GE HealthCare, aiming to improve patient care and foster innovation.
Experts from the University of Nottingham, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), and GE HealthCare have formed a new healthcare partnership to explore novel methods for enhancing patient care, advancing healthcare innovation, and supporting education. The collaboration was formalised on 14 September with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Whitehall.
This partnership unites clinical and research expertise from NUH, academic research and innovation from the University, and the global healthcare technology capabilities of GE HealthCare. It establishes a framework to address key challenges within the healthcare sector, focusing on areas such as technology, digital data and analytics, solutions, and care pathways. Opportunities for collaboration span research, innovation, healthcare delivery, and education.
The three organisations share a long-standing relationship, marked by previous collaborations including PhD studentships and clinical studies. A notable past success was the 2017 acquisition by GE HealthCare of University of Nottingham spin-out Monica Healthcare, which developed advanced wireless foetal monitoring technology allowing expectant mothers greater freedom during labour.
Building on this history, the new partnership seeks to explore further opportunities, including potential collaborations with spin-out companies and the development of new healthcare delivery approaches. This initiative follows a series of meetings, including a visit by GE HealthCare's Chris Bonnett to Professor Jane Norman, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, in October 2025, and a GE HealthCare delegation visit to Nottingham in December.
Further discussions were strengthened in May 2026 with a meeting involving NUH colleagues. GE HealthCare representatives have also visited the University's Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre at University Park and the Queen's Medical Centre, as well as the NIHR Clinical Research Facilities in Nottingham.

"The University of Nottingham, NUH and GE HealthCare all share a common interest in transforming healthcare delivery. This exciting strategic partnership will allow us to advance innovation and support education and ultimately improve the health of the people we serve."
