A new Perspex canopy has been installed at Kenilworth's Cherry Orchard household waste recycling centre (HWRC) to protect reusable items destined for sale by Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire.

The extended canopy now covers recovered items ready for sale, offering year-round protection from the elements. The Age UK reuse shop at Cherry Orchard offers visitors low-cost, pre-loved items for the home and garden, often including rare finds not available in high street shops.
Funds raised from purchases at the HWRC reuse shop network support Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire's crucial services for older people in the county, such as extra day centres and community drop-in services. The organisation is currently appealing for donations of good quality goods, particularly Christmas decorations and seasonal items, to stock the shop for the winter months.
Councillor Darren Cheshire, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Environment, Heritage and Culture, expressed pride in the partnership with Age UK, highlighting the benefits of the reuse shops. He stated, "The reuse shops at our HWRCs offer all our residents the fantastic opportunity to access a wide variety of affordable goods, which helps with the cost of living, and ensures that items are reused rather than being disposed of, which in turn helps to protect the environment."
Mary Lockheart, Head of Retail at Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire, explained the strategic aim behind the new canopy: "The new canopy at Kenilworth supports this aim by providing a dedicated covered area for some of the fantastic furniture donations we receive, helping to protect items from the elements and keep them in excellent condition for customers."
She added that this is part of a wider project to maximise the potential of all their shops based at Warwickshire County Council recycling centre sites. "By making the best use of these spaces we can divert more items from landfill, increase opportunities for reuse, and generate vital income to support older people across our local communities,” she said.
