The town centre will host a brand-new three-day Chesterfield Christmas Market from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November 2026, offering festive entertainment, artisan shopping, seasonal treats, and family-friendly activities. Organised in partnership with Dowse Events, the market will feature a variety of food and drink stalls, alongside unique artisan goods and Christmas gifts.
The market will be open from 10am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 11am to 7pm on Sunday, with daily music and entertainment. The much-loved annual Christmas Lights Switch-On will conclude the festive weekend on Sunday 22 November.
Entertainment for the Switch-On event will commence at 12pm, featuring performances by a brass band, roaming street entertainers, and traditional fairground rides. The Grinch will also make appearances throughout the day. A traditional stage show will begin outside the Town Hall at 4:30pm, with the Christmas lights officially switched on at 5:30pm. This location change aims to accommodate larger crowds and provide more space for activities.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, highlighted the event's role in bringing the community together. "Christmas is such a special time for people to get together, and Chesterfield town centre will certainly be the place to get into the festive spirit," she stated. She also noted the addition of the three-day market as something new for all ages and mentioned that recent town centre improvements have created ideal spaces for the celebration.
Councillor Sarvent emphasised the commitment to supporting local businesses, with approximately 70 per cent of traders expected to be from Chesterfield and the surrounding area, showcasing regional independent retailers, craft producers, and food vendors.
The Christmas Lights Switch-On is delivered by Chesterfield Borough Council with support from the Chesterfield Town Board Pride in Place programme, funded by the UK Government. Dominic Staniforth, Chair of Chesterfield Town Board, commented that the event was developed in response to resident feedback requesting more town centre activities. "The Christmas Lights Switch on is always a highlight of the year for many local families, so we’re looking forward to seeing people come together for what is set to be a fantastic day," he said.
