A Derby College apprentice has been named the regional winner of the Gatsby T Level Student of the Year award, securing a place in the national finals.

Daniel Burgin, who is studying a Construction T Level at Derby College, has been recognised for his exceptional achievements. He secured the award before progressing to the national stage of the competition, where he will be celebrated alongside other top T Level students from across England.
Daniel is undertaking his apprenticeship with Bowmer and Kirkland, a construction group headquartered in Derbyshire. He continues his studies at Derby College, balancing his work with the company and his academic learning.
“

"Daniel is a fantastic example of where a T Level can take you. In class he shows real commitment, curiosity and attention to detail, and he brings those same qualities to his apprenticeship with Bowmer and Kirkland. Winning this regional award is a credit to the hard work Daniel has put in, both at the College and in the workplace. Everyone at Derby College is incredibly proud of him, and we wish him the very best of luck at the national stage."

The National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards are the government’s flagship awards for the skills sector, recognising apprentices, T Level students, skills champions, and employers. Last year, the awards marked their 22nd anniversary and received over 1,100 entries.
The Gatsby T Level Student of the Year award specifically celebrates students who demonstrate outstanding personal qualities and achievements during their industry placement. Judges assess the impact a student has made on a business, instances where they have exceeded expectations, and their personal motivations.
Bowmer and Kirkland, which employs around 2,000 people, previously won the national Gatsby T Level Employer of the Year award in 2025. Daniel's success is seen as a fitting follow-up for both the company and the college.
T Levels are two-year technical courses for 16 to 19-year-olds, equivalent to three A-levels. They are designed in collaboration with employers, combining classroom study with substantial industry placements to equip students with the knowledge and experience needed for skilled employment, apprenticeships, or higher education.
