Derby City Council is encouraging residents to make the most of their Halloween pumpkins by cooking with them or recycling them through the weekly food waste collection service.

Residents are being advised that pumpkins can be a versatile ingredient, suitable for a variety of sweet and savoury dishes. Suggestions include pumpkin soup, curry, pasta sauce, roasted pumpkin, pie, and muffins. Utilising more of the pumpkin is highlighted as an easy way to reduce food waste and potentially save money.
After Halloween festivities conclude, pumpkins that are no longer suitable for display can be recycled. The council advises removing any candles, decorations, or non-food items before placing the pumpkin in the food waste caddy. For pumpkins that do not fit, bagged waste can be placed on top of the kitchen caddy for collection during the Halloween period. Black bags should not be used for food waste.

"Halloween is great fun, but once it’s over, we don’t want all those pumpkins simply going to waste. There are loads of tasty ways to use your pumpkin once you’ve finished displaying it, from soups and curries to cakes and roasted seeds. When there’s nothing more you can use, pop what’s left into your food waste container so we can recycle it."
