South Derbyshire District Council has opened nominations for its annual Unsung Hero award, seeking to recognise individuals and groups who make a significant positive impact on the local community.

The annual contest celebrates individuals and groups who work tirelessly behind the scenes to improve South Derbyshire, often without seeking recognition. The Council is encouraging residents to share stories of neighbours who lend a helping hand, volunteers supporting others, or community groups making a difference.
Nominations are now open and will close at 11:59pm on Friday 6 November 2026. The winner will receive a special trophy and will have the honour of switching on South Derbyshire's Christmas lights at the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On event in Swadlincote town centre on Saturday 28 November 2026.
The contest is open to individuals and groups of all ages residing within the South Derbyshire district. Nominees must be 18 or over, with the exception of South Derbyshire District Council employees and their immediate family members.
To nominate, residents must complete a short online form, detailing in up to 500 words why their chosen individual or group deserves recognition. Nominations should highlight the positive impact the nominee has had on people, places, or communities across South Derbyshire.
Following the nomination closure, an internal judging panel will review entries and create a shortlist. A second panel will then select five finalists, who will be announced on Tuesday 10 November 2026. The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite finalist between 10 and 20 November, with the winner announced on Tuesday 24 November 2026.
The winning Unsung Hero will play a central role at The Lights Before Christmas event on Saturday 28 November, helping to bring festive cheer to Swadlincote by switching on the town's Christmas lights.
