Blaby District Council is urging local residents to explore the possibility of becoming a councillor, with an informative event scheduled for November 25th.
With elections for all 36 seats across 17 wards of Blaby District, as well as all Parish Council seats, due on Thursday 6 May 2027, the council is keen to attract a diverse range of candidates. Councillors play a crucial role in representing their communities, influencing decisions, and shaping the future of the district.
To provide insight into the responsibilities and commitment required, a special 'Be a Councillor' event will take place from 6pm on Wednesday 25 November in the Council Chamber. Attendees will learn about the role, the necessary commitment, how to serve the public good, and the election process.
“
"Whether you’re considering standing for election or simply curious about the role, this event offers an insight into local democracy and public service in a relaxed, welcoming environment."
“
"You don't need political experience to become a Councillor, belong to a political party, be retired, have specialist knowledge or be an expert in local politics. What matters most is a commitment to your community and a willingness to get involved."
“
"We want people from all backgrounds, ages and experiences to consider how they could contribute to local decision-making. Becoming a Councillor can be challenging but the role offers so many opportunities. It allows you to represent your local community, influence decisions affecting local people, help shape local services and priorities and make a positive difference to the area where you live or work."
Existing councillors and council officers will be available at the event to offer information and answer questions. Informational materials will also be provided for further reading. Those interested in attending can register via www.blaby.gov.uk/be-a-councillor.
