The new parkrun, held at Brocks Hill Country Park, saw runners, walkers, and joggers take part in the free, weekly 5K event. A team of volunteers supported participants as they set off at 9am every Saturday.
Oadby & Wigston Borough Council provided funding for the event's establishment. This initiative aligns with the council's commitment to enhancing health and wellbeing within the borough and encouraging residents to become more active. It also forms part of the council's broader efforts to create a lasting legacy, particularly as Local Government Re-organisation may be on the horizon.
Parkrun welcomes participants of all abilities, with no time limit for completing the 5km course. A volunteer tail walker ensures that the final person to cross the line is never the last.
The event is family-friendly, with a minimum age requirement of four years old. Participants under 11 must remain within arm's reach of an adult at all times.
To take part, individuals can register for free at www.parkrun.org.uk. Upon registration, participants receive a unique barcode, which must be presented either printed or on a mobile phone at the end of the run to record their time.
The event relies on a core team of volunteers. Those interested in assisting in the local community can contact brockshillcountrypark@parkrun.com.
The course features trail and gravel paths. Onsite parking, toilet, and café facilities are available. First-time participants are advised to arrive by 8:45 am for a briefing on the route and event procedures. Further details about the route can be found at www.parkrun.org.uk/brockshillcountrypark.
