Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services students from Loughborough College took part in an exciting residential trip to Walesby Forest, Nottinghamshire earlier this month. The students camped for two nights, engaging in a diverse curriculum of activities designed to challenge them.
The challenging activities included team building, physical training exercises, simulated law enforcement training, orienteering, camouflage and concealment, and first aid emergency training. Students also experienced night time search activities and learned formal military marching practices, known as foot drills.
Adding to the evening's entertainment, students showcased their musical talents during a 'Walesby’s Got Talent' karaoke event. Stuart Taylor, Lecturer in Public Services at Loughborough College, praised the students' performance, stating, “The students where amazing! They developed their confidence, resilience, discipline, and teamwork. They were a credit to our department and the college, and we are proud of all of them.”
Taylor also commended the staff for their efforts in creating an authentic learning experience, drawing on their public services backgrounds. He extended a special thanks to college Wellbeing Mentor, Natasha Warnaby, for her support in ensuring students' mental health during the trip.
Twenty-two second-year Level 2 and 3 students volunteered to assist on the trip, supporting first-year students and offering advice. Taylor highlighted their invaluable contribution, noting, “The second year students who joined us at Walesby were invaluable in creating a supportive and inclusive environment on the trip. They were essential to assisting students, giving up their own time to help first year students. They did us proud and took initiative to develop and grow their own leadership skills.”
