Major highway and traffic signal improvements on Tritton Road, Rope Walk, and University Roundabout in Lincoln have been completed by Lincolnshire County Council, promising safer and smoother journeys.

Significant upgrades to key routes in Lincoln, including Tritton Road, Rope Walk, and University Roundabout, are now finished. The project, which has been underway for several months, aims to create safer, smoother, and more reliable travel through one of the city's busiest areas.
These works are part of Lincolnshire County Council's broader investment in the city's highway network, complementing recent improvements to Bailgate and ongoing repairs to the Yarborough Hill embankment. The council states that these combined projects will reduce the need for future disruptive maintenance.
The scheme involved reconstructing sections of the carriageway, replacing old traffic signal equipment, and enhancing facilities for pedestrians, wheelers, and cyclists. Improvements extended from east of the Brayford Wharf East/Rope Walk junction to beyond the Tritton Road/Morrisons junction.
“

"This has been a major project involving a huge amount of work. In fact, more than 20,000 hours of work have gone into delivering the improvements, alongside over 9,000 tonnes of new tarmac – a significant investment in the future of this important route. The result is a modernised highway, upgraded traffic signals and improved facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling. Just as importantly, carrying out this work now will reduce the need for more disruptive maintenance and emergency repairs in the future. I’d like to thank everyone who has used this route during the works for their patience and understanding, as well as the workforce who have worked day and night to deliver the scheme."

Cllr David East · Executive Councillor for Highways
Specific improvements include replacing traffic signals at the Tritton Road / Beevor Street junction, reconstructing the carriageway at University Roundabout and along Rope Walk / Tritton Road, and enhancing pedestrian and cyclist facilities on Tritton Road with safer crossing points and better connections at Valentine Road and Coulson Road. The existing drainage system was also cleaned, and a new section of footway/cycleway was installed between the Holiday Inn and nearby student accommodation at University Roundabout.
Key figures from the scheme include the installation of around 2.5 miles of new traffic signal cables, 50 new traffic signal boxes, 60 new traffic signals, over 1,000 square metres of new tactile paving, over 100 metres of new kerbs, and the replacement or resetting of over 200 pieces of ironwork. Approximately 85 metres of new broadband connection was also installed, with over 20,000 workforce hours dedicated to the project.
This project is part of the council’s wider £12 million programme to maintain key strategic routes across Lincolnshire, ensuring they remain safe and reliable. For further information on roadworks, visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/roadworks.
