North Northamptonshire Council is set to review proposals for a three-year extension of its Dog Control Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) at an upcoming Executive meeting.
Councillors will receive a report next week detailing the proposed extension of the current PSPO, which covers dog fouling, leads in specific areas, dogs on leads upon request, and exclusion of dogs from certain public lands. The existing order, introduced in 2023, is due to expire at the end of November 2026.
Following two public consultations, the council proposes extending the order for another three years, with amendments for specific locations including Barnwell Country Park, East Carlton Country Park, Fermyn Woods Country Park, Irchester Country Park, and Sywell Country Park. These targeted controls are recommended where evidence shows they are necessary to protect wildlife habitats, public safety, or manage user conflicts.
A previous proposal regarding Pytchely recreation ground is not recommended for inclusion due to insufficient evidence of necessity. The consultation process involved revisions based on public comments, with respondents largely supportive of the revised order.

"North Northamptonshire is fortunate to have many parks and open spaces that are enjoyed by dog owners every day, and we want that to continue. These proposals have been designed to balance opportunities for people to exercise and enjoy their dogs with the need to protect wildlife, other park users and sensitive areas."
“
"We know that most dog owners are considerate and responsible when out and about in public spaces across North Northants. However this order is designed to ensure that everyone knows the measures and we can enforce them, should we need to."
The North Northamptonshire Council's Executive will convene on Tuesday 10 November at 10am at the Corby Cube. Meeting papers are available online, and the session will be livestreamed on YouTube.
