The updated plan, approved by Full Council on 20 October, confirms a range of housing and employment sites and updates policies for determining planning applications. It also introduces new policies for affordable housing, housing mix, and accommodation for Gypsies and Travellers.
Following extensive public consultation and an independent examination, a Government-appointed Planning Inspector found the plan sound, provided recommended changes were made. This provides an appropriate basis for planning across the district.
“"This plan gives residents, communities and businesses greater certainty about where development is planned and how future proposals will be considered. It confirms the sites needed for housing and employment, strengthens our approach to affordable housing and sets out how we will meet the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers."
The council's focus now shifts to preparing a new Local Plan, necessitated by new, more challenging housing targets. Public consultation on this new plan is scheduled for Summer 2027.
The adoption of this plan does not grant planning permission for individual developments. Applications will continue to be assessed against relevant local and national planning policies. Further information on the adopted plan is available on the council's website.
