A Nottinghamshire man who feared losing his independence after a stroke is celebrating his recovery, crediting Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Community Stroke team for their vital support.

Keith Pollard, 68, from Arnold in Nottinghamshire, collapsed in the street while walking home, experiencing sudden weakness on his right side. He was admitted to hospital on 2 April 2026 and discharged in May, initially to his sister's home. The stroke affected his speech, movement, and swallowing.
Despite the challenges, Keith remained determined. "I am coping with the after-effects of a stroke, but I will not let it beat me," he stated. His family provided significant support throughout his recovery.
Following his hospital discharge, Keith received ongoing support from the Trust’s Community Stroke team. "They have supported me all the way," he said. "I get upset when I talk about them because they have been amazing."
“

"The stroke Keith had left him with several issues, which he has had to process and has worked hard to regain his independence. His progress has been amazing, and a true testament to his motivation and attitude."

Today, Keith is focused on improving his arm and hand movement, handwriting, and speech. He is also looking forward to re-engaging with his local community and learning new activities. During Stroke Awareness Month, he organised a "Walking the World" challenge, raising £105 for stroke-related causes.
Amy Eagle, Care Group Director for Community Health and Specialist Services, commented on the story's impact: "This story demonstrates the life-changing impact of stroke rehabilitation. It is inspiring to see our Community Stroke Team empowering patients to regain their independence after stroke."
The Trust encourages anyone affected by stroke to seek support. More information about the Community Stroke team, based at Park House in Calton and covering the Nottingham North East area, is available on the Trust’s website: www.nottinghamshirehealthcare.nhs.uk.
