Ashfield District Council has completed significant upgrades to Central Walk in Hucknall, transforming the pedestrian walkway into a brighter and more welcoming space.

The project involved removing the old date canopy, replacing paving with lighter blocks to harmonise with the High Street, and installing new pigeon deterrents, CCTV, bespoke planters, benches, and bins. Following feedback from residents, secure cycle fixing points have also been added.
The planting scheme for the 28 flower troughs was designed by specialists, using hardy, evergreen species chosen for their suitability to the UK climate, focusing on sustainability, biodiversity, visual appeal, and low maintenance. A mural is also set to be painted on the roof spaces of The Range building in the coming weeks, adding a final artistic touch.
The council secured £600,000, partly from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, to finance the works on Central Walk and planned improvements for Chapel Street, which are still being finalised.
These enhancements aim to improve feelings of safety for shoppers, visitors, and businesses, while also encouraging higher footfall and introducing more greenery to the town centre.
“

"The revamp of Central Walk has made a huge difference to the feel of the walkway. This key pedestrian link between Piggins Croft and the town centre is a lot of people’s first impression of Hucknall, so it’s important that it is a modern and welcoming space. Ultimately, we want to encourage higher footfall in Hucknall town centre. These works will contribute towards feelings of safety, making people want to spend more time in the town centre."
