Parents and carers across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin are being urged to ensure their children receive flu vaccinations this winter by completing school consent forms, as national data shows nearly half of eligible children missed out last year.

National figures reveal that only 52.2% of children from Reception to Year 11 received their flu vaccine last winter, leaving 47.8% unprotected. Over 7 million flu vaccinations have already been administered this autumn nationwide.
Flu can cause serious illness in children and they can transmit the virus to more vulnerable family members and the wider community. Vaccination helps protect children and those around them as winter approaches.
With flu and other viruses like RSV already circulating, eligible individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated promptly. The October half-term break offers a timely opportunity for parents to check their child’s vaccination status and complete school consent forms. If a child misses the school session, catch-up appointments are available.
“

"For many families, October half term is a chance to slow down after a busy start to the school year. It’s also a useful point to take stock of your child’s health and make sure nothing has been missed. Flu can be a significant illness, particularly for young children and those living with certain health conditions. It can also spread quickly through households, schools and communities. The good news is that there are straightforward ways for families to reduce the risk. I’d encourage parents and carers to make vaccination part of their preparations for winter and to speak to their GP or immunisation team if they are unsure what their child is eligible for."

The annual flu vaccine is offered to all children from Reception through to Year 11, with vaccinations delivered in schools and through catch-up arrangements. Alex Critchell, Operational Lead for Children, Families and Planned Care at Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, stated that school immunisation teams are visiting schools throughout the autumn term and arrangements are in place for children who miss their initial vaccination.
Parents and carers can check their child’s vaccination record via the NHS App, their Red Book, or by contacting their GP practice. Information regarding vaccination dates and consent forms is being communicated via email and text messages. The School Age Immunisation Service can be contacted on 01743 450855 (option 5) for missed vaccinations, including MMRV.
For pre-school children aged two and three, a free NHS flu vaccination can be booked through their GP practice, online, or at participating pharmacies. Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are up to date with routine vaccinations, including MMRV, HPV, and MenACWY vaccines.
Eligible adults are also encouraged to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. These can be booked via the NHS App, National Booking Service, participating pharmacies, or local walk-in centres. Information on RSV vaccination eligibility is available on the NHS website.
