“"We want Lichfield District to be a place where communities thrive, and we recognise that the council has an important role to play in making that happen. That's why we've been ambitious in our approach to social value. It's not just about getting the best deal for the council but making sure the decisions we take and the contracts we award create lasting opportunities for the people and places we serve. To have that approach recognised nationally is something we're incredibly proud of. It reflects the hard work of our teams and the fantastic partnerships we've built with businesses and community organisations across the district. There's already so much to celebrate, but we're determined to do even more."

Lichfield District Council has been recognised nationally, being shortlisted for the Public Sector Leadership category at the 2026 Social Value Awards for its innovative approach to community benefits.
The council is a finalist for its ‘Our Community Can’ initiative, which ensures that contracts awarded to businesses deliver additional benefits beyond the core work. This involves collaborating with suppliers to provide funding, equipment, skills, and practical support to local schools, charities, and community groups.
This approach has already generated over £4 million in social value across the district. Notable examples include the Community Wishing Well, which facilitated a new teen hangout at Burntwood Park, £9,000 worth of gym equipment for a local school, and new bowls equipment for a community centre.
The council has also made its largest-ever investment in the voluntary and community sector, committing £1.17 million over three years to support vital local services.
The council's commitment extends beyond contracts, integrating community benefit into its investment, regeneration, and partnership working. The ‘Our Community Can’ initiative aims to foster a connected, inspired, and thriving district by bringing together businesses, charities, volunteers, and residents.
Lichfield District Council is one of seven finalists for the Public Sector Leadership Award. The winners will be announced at the Social Value Conference in December.
