Eligible students studying courses including Education Studies, Social Work, Working with Children, Young People and Families, Youth Work and Communities, Early Childhood Studies, Fashion Design, Fashion Business and Promotion, and Textile Design can receive one-off financial support. The funding is intended to help cover essential university costs like IT equipment, learning materials, travel, and placement expenses, as well as opportunities for professional development.
Robin Leonard, Director of Development at BCU, stated that the fund ensures talented students are not hindered by financial barriers as they pursue careers that benefit society. He highlighted the potential of these students to shape lives and contribute positively through their work in supporting vulnerable children, strengthening communities, or building creative careers.
Leonard added, “For many students, even relatively modest costs can create real challenges. These bursaries provide practical support at a critical point in their university journey, helping them focus on developing their skills, gaining valuable experience and achieving their ambitions.”
The fund specifically supports courses that contribute significantly to Birmingham's development, aiming to produce graduates who can make a positive impact. Fashion-related courses were included due to George Fentham’s historical background as a mercer, a dealer in fine fabrics.
Additionally, the fund is assisting BSc Nursing students facing financial hardship by providing essential clinical shoes for practical training and placements, available for both September 2026 and January 2027 intakes.
George Fentham, a businessman and landowner born in 1630, established a charitable tradition in Birmingham over 300 years ago, dedicating part of his estate to support the poor and provide education for disadvantaged children. This legacy continues to adapt to the community's needs.
“We are incredibly grateful to the George Fentham Birmingham Charity for its commitment to widening opportunity,” Leonard commented. “Their funding reflects a shared belief that potential should never be limited by circumstance, and that investing in students today creates lasting benefits for communities tomorrow.”
