Coventry City Council is this week honouring the children of foster families, recognising their crucial role in welcoming children into care and providing a loving environment.

The city is celebrating Children of Foster Carers’ Week, a nationwide campaign run by The Fostering Network from 12–18 October. This initiative highlights the significant contribution that the biological children of foster carers make to the fostering process.
Youngsters across Coventry are being treated to an evening of bowling, pool, and fun activities as a token of appreciation from the Council. This event acknowledges the important role these children play when their families foster, offering a heartfelt thank you for their efforts.
The week-long campaign underscores the invaluable support and friendship that children within foster families provide to those who join their homes, whether for short periods or longer durations. This bond can sometimes lead to a lifelong commitment to care.

"There wasn’t a time growing up that I didn't have a child living with my mum. I grew up fostering, so, it's kind of the natural thing to do - and it's nice to give every child the upbringing and the love that they all deserve."

Alan · Foster carer
Alan and his wife Lezah, along with their four children, have been fostering for two years. Alan shared that his own upbringing involved fostering, making it a natural path for him to follow.

"In Coventry, we are fortunate to have many dedicated foster families who play such a valuable role in making a real difference to young people’s lives, and that includes the children and young people in the home. Their contribution can sometimes be overlooked, but it is so crucial in making a foster child feel welcome, loved and part of a family. They share their toys, their rooms, their homes and their families, and they give another child the friendship they need as they start a new and difficult stage in their young lives. I know from talking to people like Alan, they get a lot from the fostering experience as well. There are times when it cannot be easy, but fostering is built from everyday life, the ordinary things and shared moments, and that is what our amazing fostering family children bring. This week we wanted to highlight the role they play in making Coventry a caring child-friendly city that works hard to give every child the best start in life and say a heartfelt ‘thank-you’ to them all."

Cllr Mal Mutton · Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Coventry City Council
Cllr Mal Mutton, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Coventry City Council, emphasised the crucial, though often overlooked, role these children play. He highlighted how they share their lives to make foster children feel welcome and loved, providing essential friendship during difficult transitions.
The Council is actively seeking new foster carers in Coventry, offering support throughout the process, including financial assistance. Those interested can find more information on the official Coventry City Council website.
Furthermore, a free fostering workshop is scheduled for Saturday 14 November at the Council House from 11am to 1pm. This event is open to anyone considering fostering, offering a chance to meet professionals and current foster carers, ask questions, and learn about available support without any obligation to apply.
