A new smoking cessation service has been launched at Walsall Manor Hospital's Outpatient Department, offering enhanced advice and support for patients looking to quit smoking.

The service, which began on Monday 26 October, aims to build upon the success of existing smoking cessation support programmes already in place across the Trust. This includes the established inpatient service and support within the Emergency Department (ED).
The inpatient smoking cessation pathway was initially developed in response to the NHS Long Term Plan and was launched in October 2022. Additionally, the Trust provides a 'Stop Smoking in Pregnancy' service, commissioned by Walsall Council Public Health, specifically for pregnant individuals seeking to quit smoking.
Smoking cessation support was also introduced in the ED in July 2025, focusing on identifying patients who smoke and connecting them with community-based stop smoking services. Since its inception, the ED service has facilitated over 23,000 smoking-related conversations, identified more than 2,200 smokers, and made nearly 1,100 referrals to community services.
“

"We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved through our Emergency Department service, supporting thousands of conversations and helping more than 1,000 people access specialist stop smoking support. Launching the new outpatient service is an exciting next step, allowing us to reach even more patients across Walsall Manor Hospital. By working closely with Walsall Council Public Health, we want to make sure people know that support is available and that they don’t have to quit smoking alone. This is a huge milestone for our team and partners, and we look forward to helping more people take positive steps towards a smoke-free future."
