The City of Wolverhampton Council is set to undertake significant road improvements as part of its £10 million Highway Capital Programme 2026 to 2027, aiming to enhance journeys for thousands of residents and businesses.

Several key roads in Wolverhampton are scheduled for full resurfacing and re-lining, with works to be carried out at night where possible. These include Stowheath Lane, Dunstall Lane, Castlecroft Road, and Nelson Avenue. Additionally, roads such as Wilkinson Avenue, Brierley Lane, Rose Street, Pond Lane, Chequerfield Drive, and Chester Avenue will benefit from surface treatment work.
This initiative builds upon the extensive work already completed, which has seen dozens of roads, including major routes like Chapel Ash island and Stafford Rd/Three Tuns Lane island, receive improvements. The council highlights that the ongoing efforts are crucial for maintaining a safe and efficient highways network.
Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport, emphasised the importance of these works. "We will keep rolling out resurfacing and other treatments proven to help prevent potholes as we know just how important a safe and efficient highways network is to our residents and businesses," he stated. He added that while not every road can be resurfaced at once, targeted investment aims to steadily raise the standard of the city's roads, alongside continuous pothole repairs.
Specific dates for the upcoming works have been announced: Nelson Avenue is expected to be resurfaced over two days from Monday 9 November; Stowheath Lane over six nights from Wednesday 11 November; Castlecroft Road over two days from Monday 16 November; and Dunstall Lane over two nights from Thursday 3 December. Re-lining will follow at all these sites. Surface treatment works in Wilkinson Avenue, Rose Street, and Brierley Lane are scheduled for one day each between Sunday 2 November and Friday 6 November. Similar one-day treatments for Pond Lane, Chequerfield Drive, and Chester Avenue will take place between Thursday 5 November and Tuesday 10 November, with re-lining to follow.
All works are subject to weather conditions, and residents will be kept informed via the council's social media channels and the Causeway One Network website, which provides details on traffic restrictions and diversions.
This year's programme continues a significant investment in the city's highways, following £35 million spent over the last five years, during which more than 560 square kilometres of carriageway were resurfaced or treated. The council also reports fixing over 7,000 potholes this year and reconstructing numerous footpaths. Road safety schemes, including projects outside schools, have also been delivered as part of the capital programme. Furthermore, over 31,000 streetlights have been converted to energy-efficient LED technology, and technology upgrades have been carried out at council car parks.
