The scheme, long supported by the council, was intended to alleviate congestion, improve travel times, and stimulate economic growth in the region. However, the Department for Transport confirmed in a letter that the project has been removed from the Major Road Network and Large Local Majors Programme after a national review.
A government spokesperson stated that the programme inherited a list of unaffordable and unfunded projects, leading to a prioritisation of schemes deemed to offer the highest value for money. The Department has indicated that the Isham Bypass could be reconsidered in the future if suitable funding becomes available and a strong business case can be presented.
Despite this setback, North Northamptonshire Council remains committed to securing necessary infrastructure investment for its communities. The council plans to thoroughly review the Government's decision and explore its next steps before issuing further statements.
“"This announcement is extremely disappointing, not just for North Northamptonshire Council but for the many local residents, businesses and road users who have supported the A509 Isham Bypass for a very long time."
Cllr McGiffen emphasised that the need for the bypass remains, highlighting its recognised importance in easing congestion, enhancing connectivity, and supporting local economic expansion. He added that while frustration is understandable, the council is dedicated to pursuing infrastructure needs and will carefully examine the government's rationale and available options.
“"The A509 Isham Bypass is a scheme of significant importance to our residents, businesses and the wider economy of North Northamptonshire."
Cllr Martin Griffiths echoed these sentiments, sharing the disappointment of residents who have long awaited progress on the project. He affirmed a commitment to continue advocating for the scheme, stating, "we are not prepared simply to walk away from a scheme that could bring such substantial benefits to the area." He pledged to keep making the case for investment and to work constructively with government and partners to explore all avenues.
