A University of Northampton graduate has launched what is believed to be the UK's first dedicated beauty, haircare, and hair styling essentials dispenser at the Waterside Campus.
Michelle Carlos, a 2016 graduate in Popular Music, has transitioned into entrepreneurship with her innovative business, Mica Cosmetics. The dispensing machine, located on the first floor of the Learning Hub at Waterside Campus, offers a range of beauty and haircare items.
Items available include hair braids and extensions, accessories, hair maintenance products, ties, and silk scrunchies, with prices ranging from £1.50 to £13. Payments are contactless, and Michelle can remotely monitor stock levels to ensure shelves are always replenished.
Carlos explained that the idea for the business came to her in a dream, leading to extensive research. She highlighted the convenience for students and staff who are often on the go between lectures and activities, eliminating the need for a trip into town.
Reflecting on her student experience, Carlos expressed gratitude for the support she received at the university, which encouraged creative thinking. She is excited to be back at the new Waterside Campus and appreciative of the continued support.

"Students and staff are on the go between lectures, group workshops, meetings and other activities, but you never know when you need one of these products close by, without getting in the car to go to town, waiting in traffic, parking up, walking down the ailes and then queuing at the checkout."

"I graduated ten years ago, but I still remember that as a student I got so much support with everything I was doing and was nudged toward thinking as creatively as possible. I’m excited to be back here, at the new Waterside Campus – which was still being built when I graduated – and humbled that they are still supporting me."
