Distinguished experts, policymakers, and researchers from around the world convened for an online conference organised by the University of Northampton. The event focused on global challenges including climate change, clean energy, sustainability, and environmental justice.
The 2026 Global Conference on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition was a partnership between UON and the Human Rights Lawyers Association (HRLA), supported by the Global Human Rights Centre (GHRC). Keynote speakers included representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the University of Kansas School of Law, and the University of Northampton.
Dr Cynthia Umezulike, Chair of the conference and from UON, stated: “Addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainable development requires global collaboration and innovative thinking. This conference provided an important opportunity for experts from diverse disciplines and regions to share knowledge and explore practical solutions for a more sustainable future.”
Speakers such as UNDP Policy Specialist Seán O’Connell, UN Champion of the Earth Dr Balgis Osman Elasha, Professor Uma Outka from the University of Kansas, and UON’s Professor Simon Sneddon explored topics including critical minerals, energy justice, climate adaptation, and the future of sustainability policy. Research on climate litigation, renewable energy policy, artificial intelligence, indigenous knowledge, and sustainable development was also showcased, alongside an Emerging Scholars Showcase.
Dr Umezulike added that the conference reinforces UON's role in convening international debate, bringing together global voices and emerging researchers to contribute to solutions for environmental and development challenges. Organisers are preparing to publish key findings on climate justice, energy transition, resource governance, and sustainability.
