Redditch Borough Council has announced a significant milestone with the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Innovation Centre, located in the town centre. The development is set to drive innovation and business growth.
Cllr. Matt Dormer, Leader of the Council, stated that the project marks an "exciting new chapter for Redditch", demonstrating a commitment to creating opportunities for local businesses, attracting investment, and positioning the town at the forefront of innovation and economic growth. The centre will provide high-quality space for ambitious businesses and entrepreneurs.
The new 2,600m2 building will feature a flexible mix of office, laboratory, and workshop spaces, complemented by meeting facilities, networking areas, and a café. It is specifically designed to support innovation-led businesses, particularly in the digital manufacturing sector, offering access to specialist support services and fostering collaboration.
Mark Hudgeon, Divisional Director at Speller Metcalfe, expressed delight in breaking ground on the project, highlighting the company's pride in delivering a development that will support business growth and contribute to the town.
Redditch Borough Council will collaborate with construction partner Speller Metcalfe and local education partners to offer engagement opportunities for local students, providing insights into careers in construction and the built environment.
Brian Davy, Chair of the Redditch Town Deal Board, described the Innovation Centre as one of the most significant projects within the Town Deal programme. He noted the years of close collaboration with partners to shape the vision and secure investment for projects with a lasting impact on the town.
The project is a key component of Redditch's Town Deal programme, aimed at creating high-value employment, attracting investment, and providing a growth environment for local businesses. The groundbreaking also acknowledges the substantial contribution of the Redditch Town Deal Board.
Davy added that the move into the delivery phase of the Innovation Centre is "incredibly rewarding" and will strengthen Redditch's reputation for innovation, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
The £16.6m project, funded by the Government's Towns Fund programme, is anticipated to open in Spring 2028.
